When American Idol first debuted, I was 13 years old. That was over 10 years ago! I remember watching the first season with my family, seeing Ryan Seacrest, the host, and Brian Dunkleman, Seacrest’s then co-host, introduce a range of artists, some who would move on to become semifinalists and finalists and others that were… well… just not very good.
At the time of the first season the three judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, made history with their honest and witty criticism. It was the first time that Americans had seen this type of competition and at the time, there was nothing else like it on Television. It was new and exciting! From the beginning of the auditions to tuning-in and watching the different challenges each week, you would become invested in the competition and its talent.
Like many, I would connect with one of the contestants and root for them each week as if I knew them personally. It’s the same feeling when you’re passionate about a sports team. Each week you tune-in to cheer them on and when they win at the end, go team Kelly Clarkson, you feel like you win too! I think I enjoyed American Idol not just because of the entertainment, although their voices were captivating, and not just because of their journey to success, but in all honesty, the fashionista that I am, it was their sense of fashion that brought me back each week.
I mean, have you watched Idol lately? How amazing does Jennifer Lopez look?! Over the years both the judges and contestants became style icons providing some serious style inspiration for all of us. Here are three of our favorite style icons and tips on how you can dress like an idol.
Kelly Clarkson (American Idol winner, Season 1)
We love Kelly’s rocker sense of style. From day one she blew us away with her bone-chilling vocals. It’s only necessary that she have an eye-catching style to match.
Style Tip: Try adding and mixing textures such as lace, leather and feathers to your outfit. **Pictured above: black leather dress is Free People.
Carrie Underwood (American Idol winner, Season 4)
Carrie Underwood is the epitome of “the girl next-door.” This blond bombshell’s style never disappoints (not to mention she has legs for days!)
Style Tip: Less is always more. Wear a simple mini with embellishments paired with a solid clutch and effortless hair is the perfect outfit combination. **Pictured above: Mini embellished dress is ASOS and clutch is anthropologie.
Jennifer Lopez (American Idol judge, Seasons 11-12, 13-present)
Not only is she our favorite judge of all time, but JLO gives Idol fashion a whole new meaning. Each week I can’t wait to see what she is wearing. Not only is she 45 years old and looking fabulous, but her style is always on point.
Style Tip: Embrace color and layer. Have fun embracing bright colors. This is especially in this winter and will continue throughout spring. Also, layering a few of your favorite necklaces really can dress up any look. **Pictured above: romper is LuLu’s and layered necklaces are Neiman Marcus.
Thinking back now over all 13 season, yes, 13 seasons! (The 14th season just premiered earlier this month, on January 7th), American Idol is where a lot of superstars were born. Idol helped launch careers from Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Phil Phillips, and Chris Daughtry, to name a few. Truly a bona fide cultural phenomenon! Idol’s alumni have sold more than 60 million albums, have garnered more 250 million downloads and have been certified with 20 Platinum and 13 Gold records; and more than 70 Idol contestants have been on the Billboard charts with 440 songs attaining No.1 Billboard hit status. Idol contestants have conquered Broadway, television and film, and have won numerous awards and accolades, including American Country Music Awards, Country Music Awards, Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. If that’s not superstardom, then I don’t know what is!
